Mangamuka Gorge Resilience Project
Mangamuka Gorge Resilience is an ongoing Far North infrastructure and environmental project focused on stabilising the Mangamuka Gorge corridor after repeated slips and major weather‑related damage. The work aimed to strengthen the hillside, improve road safety, and protect the long‑term viability of SH1 as a critical connection between the Far North and the rest of Northland. Te Paatu ki Kauhanga’s involvement in the Mangamuka Scenic Reserve resilience programme reflects both our cultural mandate and our responsibility to ensure that all restoration and resilience activities uphold the values, identity, and mauri of the whenua.
Throughout the development and implementation of the project, we have worked alongside hau kāinga, project partners, and wider stakeholders to ensure that the cultural, environmental, and spiritual significance of Mangamuka remained central to every decision and action.
The Mangamuka Gorge Resilience Project focused on stabilising and protecting the Gorge after repeated slips and severe weather damage. It involved major slope stabilisation works, upgraded drainage systems, geotechnical strengthening, and long‑term planning to reduce future slip risk and keep SH1 safely connected between Kaitaia and the rest of Northland.
Our contribution to the cultural design and blessing of the Gorge’s restoration works ensured that the project incorporated elements that honour the history, narratives, and identity of our people, embedding mātauranga Māori within the broader engineering and environmental objectives.
As kaitiaki, we provided cultural guidance and environmental oversight to support approaches that protect the ecological integrity of the Gorge, recognise Mangamuka as a living taonga, and balance technical resilience with respect for the whenua. While operational fieldwork and technical components were carried out by partner agencies, our presence ensured that cultural integrity, environmental wellbeing, and hapū perspectives remained embedded throughout planning, implementation, and decision‑making processes.
Throughout our involvement in the Mangamuka Gorge Resilience Project, Te Paatu ki Kauhanga Trust has upheld its responsibility to protect the cultural, environmental, and spiritual wellbeing of Mangamuka. Our contribution ensures the Gorge’s restoration is grounded in whakapapa, guided by mātauranga, and aligned with the long‑term wellbeing of both the whenua and its communities. This reinforces our commitment to kaitiakitanga and safeguarding Mangamuka for future generations.
